Bisan amo na inin Polytechnic (tawgon ta lang ini Aprodite nan SSPSC, amo?), madayaway kay isab. Gani bagan maarang kay na ag manag paka-pasar nan teacher's board nan ila yang-gradwar nan edukasyon. tapos yaon ila mga estudyante nan computer science or comtech, mahibawuhay kay lagi isab manghutik nan kompyuter. galing ag mag laong an taga STC na arang kuno an impangkabdusan sa polytechnic kay poly-poly sa lagi kunon technic. inday lang agaw isab.

dinhi ako sa SSPSC mag masteral aprodite. ako dakan lamang impiyungan bisan gikan ako nan madayaw-dayaway isab na iskuylahan ngaton sa cebu. pero kay waray say choice ko kay ga-trabaho sa ako, enrol dakan lamang ako. pero ya surprise isab ako kay may ako sa inkakat-unan sa ako mga propesors, labi na sa ako mga klasmeyts na hapit tanan mga chiefs of office ngadi---provincial assessor, provincial secretary, provincial commander ug uban pa. pero wara ko matapos kay yakapasaray sa taraw ako nan scholarship nan civil service, naman didto ko humana an ako masters in public administration sa davao.

pero aprodite adisir ako mag-eskuyla sa davao, ga ma estruhay taraw ako nganhi sa SSPSC. Impakuha gayud ako ni anhin ma'am fim luna kay patudluon ako. fresh grad akon yadto naman grabe ko ka idealistic. dihaw terror an ngan kanako kundi horror. pero wara sa isab ako ma kick-out kay maganahay san ila mga evaluation kanako.

pagkahuman kon ako masteral, ga teach dayon ako sa graduate school. terror, este, horror gihapon ako. can't help it because i'm a staunch advocate of/for quality education. standard line ko sa grad studes ko: if you're here because you want to earn units for job promotion purposes, this is not for you; if you're here hoping to ace it without lifting a finger, you're at the wrong place. i never mince words with my studes; with me, it's either you're in or you're out. but i must be the most liberal teacher there is. people have this perception that i have very high standards, that there's no way somebody can impress me.... but then again, records will show that i have students who got a grade of flat one!

for two sems now, i've been teaching in the undergrad, an experience i enjoy more than grad school simply because, with them, i believe i can still do a lot of interventions. but sometimes, i get frustrated. you see, they can barely read!!!!! i even had a student who pronounced LABOR UNION like it was some spice! while i attribute this to individual learning curves, i sometimes wonder what kind of secondary education these people have.

it's funny. while students avoid my subjects like the plague, the dean calls me and gives me the exact subjects they thought i wouldn't be handling. thus it's normal for me to see students on first meeting with a HWATTTT? expression written all over their faces!!! hahahaha

in the undergrad, i employ a different tack. i tell my students: you need not impress me; just show me the fact that you're putting some efforts on your studies. again, as in my grad class, i don't check attendance (i don't want students to say: siaro waray gayud iningkudan!), i don't check admission slips (simply because i don't give special exams) and my passing is 40%. i know that's too low, but that's it. tapos yadi pa gayud: sa SSPSC, an composition nan final average is: 50% midterm, 50% finals. pero sa ako kon 5.0 kaw sa midterm, tapos 2.0 kaw sa finals, an imo grado automatic 2.0 kay ako na sa piyungan yaon imo 5.0 na midterm. pero kon 1.2 kaw sa midterm, tapos 3.0 kaw sa finals, ako yaon i-average, so you will have a final average of 2.1. ay, ay siaro pa sa isab gayud na dili kapasar. pero ma shock kaw aprodite, kay mahamukay gihapon an magbara-aba. to think that i give a removal exam that is actually similar to the final exam.

aprodite, i love teaching because it gives me a different kind of high. ngani puyde ako mag teach nan libre.

sspsc's president is dr. remegita olvida while the computer studies (subsumed in the Eng'g department) head is Engr. Jessie Demontano. stc's president is fr. carlos bautista while the accounting department which subsumes computer studies is headed by Dr. Aniceto P. Ambray.

but ice, is there a possibility for this program to be extended to public schools, like falcon memorial elementary school perhaps? you see, tertiary schools can take care of themselves because they have existing computer literacy programs for their teachers. in fact in the graduate school, students are required to take basic computer education which emily diaz ng-pilapil teaches at sspsc.

our government disperses computer units to public schools under the PC for Public School Program of Sen. Mar Roxas, and part of the package is a computer literacy program for teachers. Sadly, only 12 schools in surigao del sur availed of this program due to its stringent requirements. i remember fighting successfully for Gamut High School to be included in the 1st phase. but we lucked out on Purisima National High School because politics reared its ugly head at the Division Office, and the slot went to some school in cantilan. need i say more?

here's praying everything will pan out right because Purisima National High School is included in the 3rd phase. Meaning, it will receive 20 units of PC.

your office's program will have more relevance if availed of by secondary schools especially so that IT-based learning is now the focus. in fact recently, Bislig National High School placed second in the national search for IT-based learning institution (conducted among the beneficiaries of PC for Public School Program).

sebyo_basa, the beneficiaries of this project are precisely the deped public schools through the training they will get from the tertiary schools. that's why the preference is to give the training to schools who already have existing computer labs so they will be able to make use of it (usahay sa gud, an iban na mga eskwelahan ag pantagoan an ila computer lab) as well as teach IT the way it should be taught.

microsoft needs the help of the tertiary schools because they will be the one to train and mentor the deped schools.

i know microsoft also donate computer labs, but in a different program.

sa sspsc, hibaw-an gani nan estudyante na muhagbong an titser, nganlan na dayon nila nan terror. naman sa ako pangagpas nan konsepto kuman nan mga estudyante bahin sa edukasyon amo ini: na obligasyon nan titser na papasaron an mga estudyante tungod kay gabayad sila nan tuition. cute, amo?

sa ako 'dite (grabe ka 'dite taraw an dagnay), ako in match an quality with economy, labi na sa grad school. i always tell my students na i want my subject to be the cheapest subject. naman i don't require my students to submit written reports (most teachers do!) or distribute hand-outs (pero ok da haw gusto gayud niya). tapos an reaction papers (which i am very particular of) puyde handwritten. pero kon ila ipa-encode, ok da isab pero wara nay labot nan yaon sa grado anay haw uno pa kalami aton na pagka-package.

teaching is like having your cake and eating it too. you're given the opportunity to learn from your students and get paid for it. of course you share the knowledge you have, but that's life's essence, di ba? after all, knowledge is like fertilizer; for it to be useful, you have to spread it.

You can definitely say that again, ANP. I frequently visit the province, and always see to it that I spend quality time with my friends and my childhood neighbors in Tandag, and in Bag-ong Lungsod because that's where I have the most number of relatives. It's disconcerting though, to note that many, if not most of the my friends who go have graduated or are still completing their course, have an intolerable difficulty in grasping the English language...More so if you let them speak... It's really terrible, and it's indeed a pain in the ear drum to listen to them muster enough stregth and let out their limited vocabulary about the English language. Truly, that makes me somehow sigh a sigh of disbelief that education is slowly "going down the drain." I also believe that education, for it to be called quality education does not have to end in producing graduates who passed the curriculum for the courses they took. They also have to be well-equipped to face the global challenge--to be able to confidently compete with graduates of other colleges when it comes to proficiency of the English language and knowledge of the field that they have specialized in... 'yun lang po...
