MAY YAHUG SA KAMPANARYO----PATAY!

Unread post by kampanaryo_spy »

Dugmok an bukog, guba an ginawngan.

Kon gusto kamo nan detalye, paglaong lang kay isuwat ko an sinugdanan ug lintunganay nan tanan.

"MASCOT" FALLS DEAD FROM THE KAMPANARYO

The eleven-year old Juan Lacia Gomez was an out of school youth, a street urchin. Many predicted that he would become another Mac (Ranggan) because he was a habitue of gambling dens in Tago, doing errands in exchange for a meal or a small fee.

Juan's mother, Gloria Morse Lacia, died when he was six. Juan was the youngest of five siblings; only one them went to school. His father, Balong Gomez, being unemployed, couldn't provide them much and so Juan took to the streets and fended for himself.

Since last year, Juan associated himself with the players of the Tago Generals. By doing errands for them, he won their hearts. They took him in as their own and made him live with them at their quarters near the Gym. Soon enough, Juan was made the unofficial mascot of Tago Generals, joining them in all their games and in many instances that they were invited for dinner by Tagon-ons.

This year was no different as Juan remained the mascot of Tago Generals. In fact, he shared bed with Tago Generals' premier import, Mr. Maloloy-on of Cebu, who was stationed at the residence of Mrs. Tita Elizalde. Some of the Tago Generals handed down to Juan their jerseys which were many sizes bigger. Beaming with pride, the puny, dark-skinned Juan wore them like an armor, much to the envy of all kids his age.

The sun was at its fiercest on May 11, 2006. It was nearing two o'clock in the afternoon and Juan was sitting under the narra tree with some of the Tago Generals. From here, nobody could really tell what happened next. And so bits of deduction and conjecture were proferred in the aftermath.

After one player, Danny Salvacion, gave Juan P50, he left. Perhaps he thought of buying something, a biscuit maybe, at Myrna's store. The janitress of the convent, who was sweeping the ground, said that she saw Juan walk by, then stop to use the faucet and wash his hands and face. She continued doing her task when a few minutes later, she heard a loud thud. She ran to where the sound was coming from, and there on the pavement, at the foot of the kampanaryo, Juan lay like a rag doll---his legs caught in the grills of a flower bed and his head leaked with blood.

In reflex, she looked at the faucet, it was still running. Then she craned her neck, and up there, on the roadside wing of the kampanaryo's roof, a part of the ceiling was missing. In a corner of the roof, backdropped by a pale blue sky, was a bird's nest. She shifted back her eyes to Juan, and that was when she realized that Juan was clutching a fledgling---all wet and featherless. Few feet away, she saw the peeled off portion of the kampanaryo's ceiling.

People ran to the church. To say that Juan's body was broken was to understate things. His bones must have been totally smashed for many said his body could be folded. So limp were his legs that a torniquet had to be fitted even as he lay in state.

Juan's left foot was wrapped in cellophane just so it wouldn't fall off. Imagine a chopped pork leg that hangs by its skin and you get the picture. Bones jutted out from different parts of his body. The embalmer had to sew Juan's face and stuff wads and wads of cotton just to add dimension because his facial features were broken beyond recognition as he fell flat on his face.

Sympathy swelled. The imports, who by then had gone home, sent financial assistance. Tagon-ons helped and made Juan’s transition from here to the great beyond memorable.

He was entombed on 15 May 2006 under intense heat, but the crowd and the Tago Generals didn't mind.

The mascot had finally met his divine coach.
