Re: S n K's Vigan Escapade
K-Spy/Star/Kibs,
Aduy ka kulbai.
Saba mo kay sultihan ko ngay-an si Luis na “didto an ako MGA COUSINS sa iyo bay”.
Aduy basin mag blast from the past siya kay last I heard, he set foot on that house 30 years ago. Kay hu, from what I gather dili sila ngad-on mag dugay pag stay kon summer nan mga bata pa sila. If they stay sa Vigan, short, one week at the most kay adto sila sa ancestral home nan ila Nanay. They like it there because they can act like “mavericks”
. They have excessive fruit trees to climb, livestock to chase around (or shot), ponies to ride, dogs to wrestle and river to fish and swim into. Yeah… just like TAGO!!!!
Grabe sab an mga binongaw-bongaw nila sa probencia nan ila Nanay. Some, they got away with, some… well… they got punished like there’s no tomorrow. This, a mischief story I first heard at a hotel suite in Boston, where the families had gathered at the eve of Luis’s cousin’s wedding many years back.
Reminisce na sila:
Cagayan Valley many years ago. Early summer morning, the families (the As and the Bs) were to travel to Tuguegarao (about ___ hours drive from the house) iban an mga girls. An mga boys bilin with the males household troop. The girls together with the As (ginikanan ni hubby) left at the crack of dawn kay ga drive dasa sila. Hubby's Aunt and Uncle (the Bs) together with the Aunt who disciplined the 9 year old in Vigan were to leave later kay mag banag
(helicopter) sa sila, so they’ll catch up with the driving-party at destination. Koman ini, the older boys, thinking aha!!! no parents around! Time for major fun!
When the banag departed, and when the older cousins (let me name them Mr. Little B and Mr. Little A, A is hubby's older brother) can no longer hear the roar of the rotor blades of the helicopter, they declared it’s safe to hatch, execute the plan.
(Backstory: Here, in the maternal family’s homestead, they were one of the principal resident. The aunt who disciplined the 9 year old in Vigan, never married, tough as steel, but gentle as a sunset lived in the midst of her tenants. The home is situated on a hill to keep it safe from floodwaters, and a chapel was built for the family’s tenants few yards down the way, can be seen from the west window of the house. Aside from Masses and Novenas, the family uses the chapel to gather tenants for meetings. Today, the chapel is still there newly, completely renovated about 3 years ago).
Back to the mischief story, this is my poor translation of the dialogue from ilocano to tagalog:
Mr. Little B: 9-year-old, tawagin mo si Manong Silyano
9 Year old (thundering down the stairs): Mg Silyano pinatawag po kayo ni Manong Little B
Mg. Silyano following the 9 year old: Sinyorito _______?
Mr. Little B: Mg Silyano, patunogin mo ang kampana
Mg. Silyano: Anong klasing tunog po?
Mr. Little A: Mg Silyano, anong tanong yan? Ilang tunog ba ang kampana nyo dito?
Mg. Silyano, who babble as a driver is good friends to the boys: May tunog para sa mesa: Teling-teling; may tunog para sa meeting: teling-teling balang-balang
Mr. Little A: Papaano mo magawa yon?
Mg. Silyano: Pinada-an sa pag hila ng pisi.
Nag isip si Mr. Little B.
Mr. Little B: Yong tunog para sa meeting Manong.
Mg. Silyano did as he was told.
The boys watched from the west window to see if people would respond and lo and behold they did. Remember this is still early morning so the people were probably just on their way to the fields.
Mr. Little B and Mr. Little A, commanded their siblings to carry water and tin of biscuits to the chapel. The younger cousins obliged.
When more people came in, Mr. Little B and Mr. Little A decided it’s time. Mr. Little B and Mr. Little A, both, don on sotanas that were hanged from inside the cabinet. The younger boys were assigned sacristans and they performed, or, to be politically correct --- CELEBRATED
the holy Mass, in its entirety. Basta in pang gutasan kami tanan nan kinatawa kay memorize sa gayod nila an order nan mass sanan panultihon nan pare word-for-word. Anay kay ga homily/sermon pa si Mr. Little B. The sermon? How to properly dry the tobacco leaves.
Mr. Little B was about 15, Mr. Little A was 14 years old at the time. Which was no surprise kay kon dili sila maka attend nan mesa sa simbahan an pare san mokadto sa ila mag mass demodo waray gayod ila palta. In pakalawat nilan mga tao nan biscuit. (I pulled Lu aside and asked why the people participated in the mischief?
Lu shushed and admonished me not to ask any questions kay he was too busy laughing. Isa siya na sacristan.)
Now, they thought they got away with it, scot-free. WRONG. Few days later, they were called to the sala and on the coffee table were MARAWILIS (duda ko tumoy ini nan kawayan kay sakiti sa kono ini kon amoy gamiton pag latos) ready to use for their spanking. Mr. Little B and A, the brain of the operation, aside from the spanking, were commanded, paga pa luhod, paga pa dupa to teach them NEVER, EVER AGAIN mock the holy sacrifice of the mass. That night, in that hotel suite in Boston the laughter went on until wee hours of the morning.
Star,
In kit-an mon shirt nan iya uyo-an sa museum na yaon pay dugo?
K-Spy, sigi lamang kay mag iban da kita pag kadto moiban kita kan Luis
Aduy ka kulbai.
