MUTYA NG TAGO: a montage!

The Search for Mutya ng Tago is one great spectacle. And having hosted all but the maiden pageant, I've seen the best and worst of it!

The Mutya ng Tago pageants flash like a neverending movie in my mind: the preparation, the pictorial, the presscon, the talent show, the competition onstage, the drama backstage, and the hullabaloo that often resulted from it.

The Search for Mutya ng Tago was launched close on the heels of Edsa Revolution, in 1986 when Mr. Jun Pimentel was appointed OIC Mayor of Tago. The most I have from that show is secondhand information because back then, I was still balancing debits and credits at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City.

By requiring candidates to establish their Tagon-on lineage, Tago had laid early on the cornerstone of the quest for Mutya ng Tago.

Mutya ng Tago '86 was an inter-barangay competition won by Georgette S. Bautista who represented Barangay Purisima. Many rooted for Merlinda H. Acevedo, representing Victoria, but Georgette edged her out when she faltered in the first Q&A round which required an exact answer as it was in quiz bowl format. Her question, prepared by then Municipal Trial Court Judge Carlos Lindo, was: If Americans have their White House, what do Britons have?

(When I took over the Mutya ng Tago franchise, I changed the first Q&A round into a casual interview which required no right or wrong answers, only opinions. Thus, the quote---"I may not perfectly agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"---became part of my standard spiel to signal the start of the Q&A portion.)

Mutya ng Tago '86 had no "major controversy" except for the buzz that one candidate, Marites Montero, had allegedly complained to be the rightful winner of the Best in Sportswear Award and not the other candidate whose name was also Marites Montero. In defense, the other Marites said that the emcee couldn't be wrong because he announced the winner not by name but by number. Again this is secondhand information and I can't even recall which Marites said what.

Ma'am Jane Miranda and the late Edward Reyes, then a popular radio announcer in Tandag, hosted the show.

The next Search for Mutya ng Tago---which Madz had joined---began even if the gowns of the three candidates were still being hemmed in Tandag!

I’m not a fan of pageantry but, that’s right -- questions should be casual geared toward ones ideas and opinions. Good tool to glimpse inside contestants character and persona. Oh well, glad you changed the Q&A format K-Spy. If one has to do it, might as well do it right. Right?

THE MOVIE IN MY MIND...I am imagining a production number inspired from MISS SAIGON MUSICAL- beauty contestants in colorful costumes singing and dancing the tune of "The American Dream"! I am also considering a scene from an excerpt of Les Miserables "I DREAMED A DREAM"... ALL OF THESE ARE just my pure and widest imaginations, the movies in my mind... How about you guys?

Will start with “A Puzzlement”, followed by “Getting to Know You” “Shall I Tell You What I think About You” and finish it off with “Shall We Dance”.

Or we can go really exotic with Rogers and Hammerstein’s, South Pacific.
Let’s start with “A Cockeyed Optimist” followed by “Some Enchanted Evening” will have some hand action with “Happy Talk” (I’ll be Bloody Mary) then finish it off with “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair”.

Let’s add more kick. We’ll borrow “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” from Gigi and “Lady Marmalade” from Moulin Rouge.

i've changed the title of this post from "movie in my mind" to "montage" kay serial sa ini nan history nan Mutya ng Tago: from '86 to '98 (the last mutya ng tago). kon tapos na an tanan, then we will string the posts (hopefully) to come up with one composite article about the Search for Mutya ng Tago.
