TUBAY IS OUR GUY!
Engr. Retche Gabenite Tubay whose rating in the Civil Engineering board exam is shown below, makes his alma mater, the Surigao del Sur State University, very proud. And just so the obvious won't be missed, it has to be stressed: Out of the three Civil Engineering board subjects, Engr. Tubay got perfect in two: Mathematics, Surveying and Transportation; and Hydraulics and Geotechnical Engineering!
Engr. Tubay's average is a high 93.35%! (It is said that the first placer didn't get a rating of 100% in any of the three subjects!)
Part of a very poor family in Crossing, Victoria, Engr. Tubay finished secondary education at Purisima National High School (PNHS) in Tago as First Honorable Mention. PNHS teachers would remember him as a small unassuming guy with a stunning mathematical skill.
Some high school classmates would remember Engr. Tubay having lunch with nothing but oil and soy sauce to go with his rice; other times, he had Magic Sarap to sprinkle on his food. And always, he had to hitch a ride in going to school and back to his home in Victoria.
Engr. Tubay studied Civil Engineering at then Surigao del Sur Polytechnic State College, where, very early on, he caught the attention of his professors. Engr. Remegio Dapanas (the "terrorist" teacher in the Engineering Department) had said that the analytical skill of Engr. Tubay could rival, if not surpass, the skill of his teachers.
Engr. Tubay had his review in Manila where he had to subsist on noodles. In the pre-board exam, he placed first.
One could only imagine Engr. Tubay's stay in Manila for the review. While others had various supplements to enhance their memory and endurance, he only had water. While others had Starbucks and Pizza Hut, he only had Kopiko and pan de sal. While others had baby back ribs, he only had instant noodles.
Dr. Omas-as, Vice President for Academic Affairs, said that probably due to stress and improper diet, Engr. Tubay was not feeling well on the second day of the board exam. But still he gave his all, believing that the act he was making spelled his future.
Engr. Tubay went home with nothing but crossed fingers. He had no pasalubong for his family; what he had were stories not of his impoverished stay in Manila, but of how the city looked to him who grew up seeing nothing but trees and carabaos; of how it felt to ride a boat for the first time; of how a mall really looked like; and of how a piece of chicken tasted like at Jollibee.
One doesn't know what his family gave up just for him to have that review in Manila. And one can only guess how his family bent their knees in prayer, knowing that should he fail, there would be no second chance for him because of financial reasons.
Then came the result. And Engr. Tubay was only .001 away from 10th place!
More than stunned, everybody cheered for Engr. Tubay!
If there's one thing Engr. Tubay had proven, it's this: while the school matters, it's the ability of the student that really spells the big difference!
(PS: Right after he passed in November 2010, Engr. Tubay was taken in by SDSSU as part of the teaching staff of the Engineering Department. And just last week, a fun-run, as part of the First University Day Celebration, was done to generate funds to support indigent students like Engr. Tubay who will take the Civil Engineering board exam this May.
Engr. Tubay has paved the way for all this.)

as I write this, the Surigao del Sur State University, on the occasion of its first anniversary of being a university, is honoring Engr. Tubay with a motorcade.

Re: TUBAY IS OUR GUY!
Wow what a very inspiring story this is! Am deeply touched.
This defies the theory the school is the prime reason. Here it shows, uppermost is the ability of the student.
Am very sure this guy will go a long way in his chosen career. Good on him.

Re: TUBAY IS OUR GUY!
Sugz,
there's an interesting factoid in the PRC result of Engr. Tubay. the Chairman of the Board of CE is Engr. Apollo Enriquez. If i'm not mistaken, he was the classmate of Gerang, Tanie, Noynoy Young and Arnold Espinoza at University of the Visayas. "Cocoy" as he was fondly called went on to become the 7th placer in the CE board exam.
his girlfriend was Judy's dorm-mate at Pink Dorm. (Forgot her name.) He is from Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur and the townmate of Gerang's girlfriend then, Bless Pueblos. It turned out, Cocoy is also a townmate of Dayette Espinoza.
Inday haw amo ini siya. pero bagan amo gayud.

K-spy,
This story of yours can conclusively me say that it’s not all about from where and what school you came from as long as you have the brains and the undying nerve to conquer what you want to unravel your life in the future.
Engr. Tubay’s story is amazing and it made me wow.
Congratulations, Engr. Tubay. I am undoubtedly proud of you.
