Jud,
Am sure you know that you are one of the very few “bestest†friends I have.
We go back a long way, our families being related. And I was even born in your house.
I spent most of my free time in elementary and high school at your stall in the old tiangge where I got to eat every snack food that your mom cooked and sold. At times you’d give me puhunan so that I could play taksi and palabay (where I was good at!) in the then newly reclaimed area that would become the new market site. And later we would have nocturnal spirit of the glass sessions even if you parents disapproved of them. And when we were done, we’d devour all the unsold snack food that lay on the table.
We “clicked†maybe because we have a lot of things in common. And they mistook our outspokenness for snobbishness and arrogance. But we couldn’t care less.
We share some passions: komiks, radio soaps, books, and movies most especially! Remember the time when you watched “Gone With The Wind†at Century 21 on "last full show" all by yourself and somebody stalked and “held-you-up?†I was scared witless when my landlady knocked at my room to tell me you were outside. My God! It was past midnight and you were there trembling. I blamed myself for not telling you that GWTW was many-hours-long. That’s how crazy we are when it comes to movies!
Because you lived at Pink Dorm just behind the University of San Carlos, we passed time after class on a bench that faced the main gate and the patio where the doyenne, a persnickety old maid, held court, eyeing us like a hawk about to pounce on its prey! Then when hunger struck, we’d march to Colon and buy either Elorde of Spanish Bread at Julie’s.
I smile when people say that s/he is their best friend because they haven’t had a single rift. We know this to be a farcical friendship, of course. Ours was such that we often quarreled, declaring cold war against each other for days or even months. But each time we reconciled, the friendship got stronger because another layer of our persona was revealed, allowing us to know each other better.
You’re one of the simplest friends I have whose class is innate. I couldn’t remember a day that you wore anything but Levi’s. Which is not to say that Levi’s equates with class, but it’s just that you have your way of exuding class even in denims!
You generosity extends from here to there, and this could be the reason why you’re continually blessed because you know how to share your blessings to others.
Although I believe that in great friendships---like in great loves---there’s no need for words for even in silence, great friendship is heard and felt----still let me say THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE FRIENDSHIP.
