this is quite a mouthful, so first things first:
happy birthday to a very special friend---abb!

“everybody’s crush”---that’s my earliest memory
of you. and had the term “crush ng bayan” been
coined earlier, you would be its perfect embodiment.
why not? every hot bloodied purisimian male
homo sapien had a crush on you then.
(but of course you don’t want me to name them, do you?)
I remember one time, at the wake of
jimboy medrano, his brother mimi,
who was then in college, joined our group
for a game of “truth or consequence,”
and when he was made to tell the truth
about his secret crush, he said, without tugging
at his beard: emma hangad!

the mere mention of your name is enough
for me to conjure the image of the Virgin Mary.
You see, in a run-up to the fiesta celebration
of Tago in the late 70s, the SPC sisters mounted
a tableau that had you standing on a lace-covered
pedestal, swathed in voluminous powder
blue silk and exuding with serenity and
pulchritude that only Degas could capture!
it was the same image that flashed in my
mind when, after a bit of sleuthing and
a lot of help from bonsal, I had unmasked
your identity as alibangbang.

The first time you posted your thoughts,
I was impressed, though I didn’t know who
you were then. I remember telling myself
that this butterfly had something in between
her wings, and truth to tell, each time you fluttered
your wings for some posts, you showed
substance. it was then that I knew that
tagosds.org could count on you.

And this you proved, albeit unwittingly.

from then on, you never cease to amaze me.
you’ve shown us how grounded you remained
to be despite the very comfortable niche you
have carved for yourself and your family.
but most especially, you inspire me with the
way you have remained a true tagon-on,
someone who is never ashamed to admit
her humble roots and remains a promdi in
heart and spirit despite the fact that she
swings from power lunches in some
posh hotels in Manhattan to some power shows
in the glittering catwalks of New York.

it didn’t take long for us to know that
we’re kindred spirits: we love books;
we love art; we’re sentimental about
things old and past; we agree that in
life there are no regrets, only lessons;
and most of all we’re one with The Bard
when he admonished that to thine
own self be always true.

meeting you in the flesh last year was a
memorable experience, one that almost
made me genuflect in admiration and respect.
silently I thanked god for making our paths cross.

and because today is your birthday,
I’m asking god again to keep you in the
palm of his hand, and to give you more
blessings---health most especially!--- so that you
can continue touching other people’s lives.
