TAGON-ONS, AGOG OVER THE SEARCH FOR MUTYA NG TAGO IN AUGUST

Tagon-ons can’t contain their excitement that this year’s 90th Araw ng Tago Celebration in August will be capped by the Search for Mutya ng Tago. But this is expected given that the last pageant was staged in 1998!

Mayor Hermenegildo P. Pimentel Jr. launched the Search for Mutya ng Tago in 1986, just six months after the EDSA Revolution. The tilt has since then become a benchmark against which all other beauty pageants are measured. And though it comes few and far between, the Search for Mutya ng Tago has become the much awaited event of the Araw ng Tago.

The Search for Mutya ng Tago is all about the pursuit of excellence and the celebration of Tago’s beauty, elegance, and culture. It showcases young aspiring Tagon-on women in a high quality production that is guaranteed to develop their self-confidence, talent, leadership, personal and social skills with self-discipline, grace, intellect, diligence, and style. Through the pageant, the candidates will have an opportunity to develop friendships, teamwork, and other invaluable experiences that will be with them for the rest of their lives. And it’s the hope of the pageant organizers that the contestants will learn from the experience and use it as a stepping-stone to achieving their goals.

The Search for Mutya ng Tago is not simply a beauty competition. Contestants must have a good facial and body structure, charm, good personality, and ambassadorial qualities. The winner of the Search for Mutya ng Tago must possess these attributes as she is expected to be a young lady of good character. Equally important is the discipline and friendliness she has to display in her conduct both public and private and her determination to make the most of her talents. And not to be forgotten, she should be capable of representing Tago in every aspect during her reign. With this, the Mutya ng Tago is defined as a quintessential role model who personifies the beauty, culture, and splendor of Tago. She aims to raise awareness of her hometown’s boundless potentials even as she builds long lasting friendships, promotes harmony, and deepens reciprocal understanding among Tagon-ons all over the world.

The Search for Mutya ng Tago has seen through over 70 contestants with an impressive list of titlists: Gigi Bautista-Abis who now works in Malacanang as Legal Assistant, Venus Pontevedra-Lim who is a physical therapist in New Jersey, Bing Garcia-Estal who is with the National Statistics Office in Tandag, Benben Feliciano-Gandionco who recently got married and is leaving for the states, Bambi Yu who is an international flight stewardess, and Dinah Patrimonio who manages a successful real estate agency in Davao City. These women, all proud to be Mutya ng Tago, continue to exemplify the ideals of a true Tagon-on, long after their reigns have ended.
