Rolando C. Soriano passed away around 1am this morning at Quirino Memorial Hospital in Quezon City. Before ultimately succumbing, Nong Roland had been struggling for his life in ICU due to 2nd degree burn injury, which resulted to heart & kidney complications.

His remains lie in state at the St. Peter Chapel, (beside Pegasus) Quezon Avenue, Quezon City. The body of Nong Roland will be brought to Tago on Saturday, 21st of February 2009. Interment will be announced later.

THREE persons were injured when a leaking liquefied petroleum gas tank exploded in Marikina City yesterday.

Police said victims Rolando Soriano, 64, and helper Mona Corada, 18, both sustained second degree burns while Jesus Escuerto, 40, a carpenter, suffered third degree burns.

Initial reports said the explosion took place at 11:30 a.m. while Soriano’s wife, Helen, was cooking inside their house at Unit 7 Molave Townhouse, Molave St., Concepcion Uno in Marikina City.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Noel Guiab of the Marikina City fire department said the explosion was triggered by a loose grip of the LPG tank’s regulator causing the fumes to leak.

Hours before the explosion, Escuerto was fixing the sink of the kitchen, prompting Soriano to temporarily remove the gas tank and its regulator placed below the sink area.

When Helen was about to cook their food for lunch, Soriano placed the regulator again on the cylinder, however it was not sealed properly.

The fumes accumulated while Helen was cooking and ignited. The blast struck the victims, who were in the kitchen.

Helen was saved by a telephone call.

Soriano and Mona were still being treated at the Labor Hospital in Quezon City while Esquerto remains confined at the SDS Hospital in Marikina City.
