abb, basin i post ini ni bonsal sa main page. but here goes:

GRAVEYARD REMINISCENCES
By k_spy

As a child, I never liked the creepy feel and smell of cemeteries, and the sight of fractured tombs was enough to make me lose my appetite for days. In the few times that I had joined funerals, I had to puke my succeeding meals along with my entrails. Thus, All Soul’s Day would have been a non-event to me if not for theme writing.

In elementary, we were required to write a composition on how we spent All Soul’s Day. And to ensure factual writing, a classmate was assigned to check the attendance at the big white cross which was guarded by two pockmarked, sightless angels.

I used to write about making a ball out of candle drippings which our maid would later use to oil the old flat iron to keep it from rusting and to wax the narra floor in circular motions like a pulled spring binder of a Golden Gate notebook. Not much later, I decided to join my friends in their shenanigans, if only to add zing to my subsequent compositions.

The secret to bigger candle balls, my friends told me, was to switch strategy from passive to active mode. As in, instead of waiting for candles to burn trickles, I had to steal the whole stick when no one was looking. (Understand that if I heeded them it was because the then 10-year old me had yet to develop scruples.) Splitting the loot later under the thick canopy of a balete tree, we’d melt it onto our waxy orbs which, at 11 a.m., was already the size and color of a dappled softball.

Then off we went to the “great candle buffet.” This was at the big white cross whose circular pool at the base was a blazing inferno of candles lit by people whose dead relatives were entombed elsewhere. As provincial buffets went, one had to wedge between clammy and stinking bodies or climb on someone’s back to get to the main course. The latter was risky as one could be thrown off into the lake of fire like what happened to our friend who ended up with more blisters than a board of Chinese checker. Young and agile as we were, we always managed to get a piece of the action.

At twilight, after seeing the last wisp of smoke reach for the pastel sky, we’d start foraging for food that was originally offered for the dead. The living always made sure to uncover these foods to make it easier for the dead, who’d lost their sense of touch, to eat. The food was usually placed alongside candles on top of tombs where ants attacked them quicker than the spirits could say—bon appetit!

By this time everything had gone stale—the soda crackers no longer cracked, the soft drinks no longer foamed, and the biko no longer glistened. But just the same, my friends devoured them, saying the food were not stale but were only so because the spirits had already partaken of them. As I watched ant-coated food vanish into my friend’s parched mouth, I puked so hard I had to tuck my eyeballs back to their muggy sockets.

But most things, like people, do change. I now look forward to All Soul’s Day because after our parents died, it means reunion with relatives and friends. In fact, it no longer agitates my gut, what with the fortune Tagon-ons spend on graves and the makeover they do to celebrating things with the dead.

In our town of Tago in Surigao del Sur, All Soul’s Day is a frenzied nine-day run up to November 1 where Tagon-ons troop to the cemetery at night to watch an eclectic show that includes a prayer rally, a rock concert, a ballroom dance contest, a masquerade, a fire blowing contest and a Miss Gay Tilt.

Creeping with people, our cemetery becomes a perfect venue for showing off one’s belongings and fashion sensibilities. TV, VCD players, lechon, gourmet food, wines and flowers have become staple tomb-top items, giving the place the chaotic ambience of a tiangge.

But amidst all these, children still shape candle balls even if times have made the pursuit tougher. Candles, you see, have become so expensive that they remain unlit, especially those that are colored and scented and come in the shape of either a luxuriant cabbage rose or a winking cherub in diapers.

I wonder what the children write about now in their English composition class.

K-sky, another great piece of work ! ! ! Thank you. You see, I had forgotten, thanks for bringing this piece of memory alive. Was deep in thought, didn’t realize that a colleague was standing along side me. She got curious, so I shared your article. She was dumbfounded and totally bemused. She keeps asking “really??? …. you people did that?”. I said, “yes of course. . . we people from that far end of the globe knows how to make clean fun of things….add a dash of harmless mischief, and everyone will have a marvelous time” She looked at me funny and said…”you filipinos are something else” with a touched of smile that I can only take as a compliment. She left my office with a newfound knowledge from our far distant land, which you just brought closer to our hearts.
